Huh?

  • Mood:
  • Weather: Cooler today...overcast
  • Hears: pandora.com
I arrived home from work yesterday to a flurry of activity in the kitchen.  My youngest daughter was arguing for a lasagna dinner, my two boys were pulling for corn dogs and my oldest was in the process of making herself a peanut butter sandwich.  The dog and at least one of the cats were underfoot as well, and we don't have that large of a kitchen.

Then my oldest, peanut-butter-sandwich-making daughter turned to me and said proudly and with much excitment, "I've given up meat for Lent!"

"Huh?"

"I've given up meat for Lent!"

"Yea!  She's gonna be a vegetarian!" chimed in another voice.

"Oh really?  Why are you celebrating Lent?"  Pardon my curiosity, but we've never celebrated this before...ever.

"Well, my friend is doing it and I'm half Catholic anyway, so it makes sense..."

*note to self:  explain to oldest daughter that while I understand her reasoning, it is not possible to be "half Catholic."

"Hmm.  All meat or just red meat?"

"All meat!"  She beamed at me proudly.

What is a mom to say in this instance?  "Ok hon."  We'll see if she actually makes it.

I recall being about the same age as my dd and strolling into the kitchen one evening, announcing, "I think I'll be a vegetarian."  My mom played along and it lasted a couple of weeks.

For the rest of the evening, my youngest son ran around the house, announcing to no one in particular, "I'm gonna give up lying for Lent!"

You know, there might be some good that comes from......HEY!  Wait a second there!!
0 moans.
